The Snappening Is Happening
Business Insider – A giant database of intercepted Snapchat photos and videos has been released by hackers who have been collecting the files for years. Shocked users of the notorious chat forum 4chan are referring to the hack as “The Snappening,” noting that this is far bigger than the iCloud hacks that recently targeted celebrities. One news report suggests the hacked third-party Snapchat client was Snapsave. The popular Android app allowed users to keep Snapchat photos and videos, which automatically delete when viewed through the official Snapchat app.
In a statement to Business Insider, Snapchat confirmed the images came from third-party sites, while denying that Snapchat’s servers were breached by hackers: We can confirm that Snapchat’s servers were never breached and were not the source of these leaks. Snapchatters were victimized by their use of third-party apps to send and receive Snaps, a practice that we expressly prohibit in our Terms of Use precisely because they compromise our users’ security. We vigilantly monitor the App Store and Google Play for illegal third-party apps and have succeeded in getting many of these removed.
So I know Kmarko and Big Cat already blogged about the Snappening. I kind of felt like they were laissez faire about it though. “Like oh this is awesome…more nudes or what did people expect to happen? They didn’t really think naked snaps disappeared did they?” Umm yes we did.
Bottomline is looking at at naked pictures of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, and Justin Verlander is one thing, but when it starts happen to everyday people that’s another. I mean what happens if my snaps get out there? What happens if Anastasia Ashley and Hank’s romance goes public? It’s chaos in the streets. It’s not so funny and harmless anymore. Seriously these guys are acting like they’ve never sent inappropriate snaps before. If Spooky Ghost gets to me I’m cooked. The good news is it sounds like the only thing that’s gotten hacked is the 3rd party client Snaphack or Snapsave. Basically the apps that let you save dirty snaps without the person who sent them knowing. I don’t think chicks are smart enough to use those things so none of my shit will be saved. Still don’t like the idea of normal people getting hit by Spooky Ghost. Celebrities only. That’s the rule.
PS – For all chicks who send me dirty snaps you’ll be glad to know I don’t use those services. I believe in the integrity of the snapchat.
